About our Bruxism Treatments
Excessive teeth clenching and jaw grinding, otherwise known as Bruxism, most commonly occurs in adults aged 25-44 years old. Most people grind and/or clench their teeth occasionally to some degree. Bruxism is broadly characterised by grinding of the teeth and clenching of the jaw that causes tooth wear and breakage, disorders of the jaw (pain and limited movement) and headaches.
Bruxism is classified into awake bruxism and sleep bruxism:
- Awake Bruxism is characterised by involuntary clenching of the teeth and jaw grinding in reaction to certain stimuli. There is generally no tooth grinding with awake bruxism.
- Sleep Bruxism is characterised by automatic teeth grinding with rhythmic and sustained jaw muscle contractions.
Botulinium toxin injections (botox) are a safe and effective treatment for Bruxism. The injection of small doses of Botulinium toxin directly into the masseter muscle of the jaw, weakens the muscle enough to stop habitual grinding of the teeth and clenching of the jaw, and significantly relaxes the muscle to reduce the wear and tear on the teeth due to Bruxism.
