About our Hyperhidrosis Treatments
Excessive Sweating (Primary Hyperhidrosis) has no known cause and is not the result of an underlying medical condition. It usually begins in childhood or adolescence and sometimes runs in families and it can significantly affect a person’s quality of life. Excessive Sweating can lead to embarrassment and social anxiety, and many people can find the condition quite upsetting. The condition is not a side-effect of medication.
Hyperhidrosis affects particular parts of the body, most commonly the hands, feet underarms or the face/head and it usually affects both sides. The condition can sometimes affect the chest or groin areas too. Many patients have more than one part of the body affected. Patients with primary Hyperhidrosis rarely sweat when they are asleep.
Common signs of Hyperhidrosis are as follows:
- Sweating from particular parts of the body on both sides
- Sweating at least once a week
- Began sweating as a child or during adolescence
- Find sweating impairs your daily activities
- You do not sweat at night
Botulinium toxin injections – botox in short and often associated with cosmetic wrinkle reduction – is a particularly effective treatment for Hyperhidrosis. Botulinum toxin is gently injected into the affected areas that commonly sweat, to help control the condition by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands do not receive chemical signals, the severe sweating settles. Further treatment is typically needed after four to six months, as the nerves regenerate. Over time, however, patients can go longer between treatments.
